In June 2018, we Theo Yon was appointed as our full-time sailing instructor, supported by Sue Dalton to manage our ‘Start Sailing’ programmes. Our six 09’er dinghies desperately needed restoration along with our 4 Laser Picos and Theo has done a great job getting all these boats ship-shape again.
The goal is to create not just a great sailing school but to build a permanent home for youth development sailing in Hout Bay and once again be able to have an intake of disadvantaged youth from neighbouring townships, to progress from learners to proficient sailors and enjoy the sport of sailing.
These youngsters will learn alongside other youth and adults from more affluent backgrounds, also undergoing sailing instruction. We believe this has a positive effect through developing essential life skills and creating positive interaction between communities.
In addition to our dinghy fleet, sponsorship is kindly provided by the Jewish Maritime League to make it possible for us to maintain two L26 keelboats for Youth Development, however with additional funds we can extend the reach of the programme … sponsorship funds gladly welcomed!
School Holiday camps are run to enable children from 10-18 years of age, to discover sailing. Dates are advertised on this site and through the HBYC and Hout Bay Organised Facebook pages.
Our sailing school that started on 3 July 2018, just happened to be the coldest day of the year at that point, but this did not deter the youngsters from having a great deal of fun! Wetsuits are provided!!!
