We’re proud to announce that Paul Tomes has been appointed as the new President of Hout Bay Yacht Club.
Paul has played a major role in shaping the modern era of the club, helping drive initiatives that have expanded membership, brought in new generations, and strengthened the sense of community around HBYC.
Q: Paul, where did your journey with the club begin?
“I joined the club around 2014 as an ordinary member…”
What began with sailing a unique 18-foot sports boat quickly evolved into something much bigger. In 2016, Paul pitched the idea of creating a one-design keelboat fleet at HBYC – the beginning of what would become the now-thriving Hunter 19 fleet.
That fleet has since grown to more than 30 boats and has become a major part of the club’s culture and growth.
Q: What are some of the moments you’re most proud of?
Alongside helping establish the Hunter 19 Challenge, Paul also helped introduce coastal rowing to the club through the development of the St Ayles Skiff programme – another initiative that has brought new energy and new members into HBYC.
He is passionate about how both the Hunters and the rowers helped lower the average age of the club and bring fresh life into the community.
Q: What matters most to you about the future of the club?
“The future is to make sure the club remains relevant, grows, and is a focal point for the community.”
Paul believes HBYC’s strength lies not only in sailing, but in its place within the wider Hout Bay community. He describes Hout Bay as a true village – unique, active and deeply connected – and sees the club as an important part of preserving that spirit.
Q: And what’s the bigger vision?
For Paul, growth is about getting more people involved, creating opportunities for participation, and helping more people experience the bay and everything the club has to offer.
