We’re pleased to share that Rob Fine has been elected as the new Commodore of Hout Bay Yacht Club. For Rob, this isn’t just a new role, it’s something that’s been part of his life for decades.
Q: Rob, what’s your history with the club? “It began when I was about that high…”
Rob grew up around HBYC. His parents were members back in the 1980s, long before the club moved to its current home. Sailing was part of family life from the start, and over the years he’s remained closely connected to the club – eventually joining as a full member at 18 and later stepping into leadership roles within the sailing sections.
Q: What keeps you connected to the club after all these years? “I’ve always had a passion for it… it’s a place I can come, relax and enjoy.”
Rob speaks about the club as more than just sailing – it’s the people, the friendships, and the sense of belonging that keep him coming back. Over the past few years, he’s seen a shift toward a more social, family-oriented environment, with stronger camaraderie and a welcoming atmosphere.
Q: What does the future of HBYC look like to you? “Constantly growing… but also becoming a broader water sports and community centre.”
Rob’s vision is to see the club continue to grow – not just in sailing, but as a hub for all kinds of water-based and community activities. While sailing will always remain at the heart of HBYC, the goal is to create a space where different interests come together, and where more people feel they belong.
Q: And what matters most to you right now?
As a father, Rob is especially focused on building something lasting – a place where children can be introduced to the water, where families feel welcome, and where the next generation of sailors can grow up with the same experiences he did.
From growing up at the club, to now being a part of its leadership, Rob’s journey reflects what HBYC is all about – community, continuity and a shared love for the ocean.
We are all looking forward to this next chapter.
